At just over seventy feet long (the maximum length of craft able to navigate the Grand Union Canal) the Leighton Lady embodies the beauty and grace of a bygone era when people lived and worked on the man-made waterways which were the lifeblood of the nation. The Lady herself was purpose-built for passenger carrying and is a fine example of the canal tradition of dazzling polished brass and the much loved canal art of hand-painted roses and castles. |
| Outside she reminds you of the horse-drawn narrow boats of yesteryear, but inside the Lady is all comfort. The passenger saloon is heated, with cushioned seats inviting you to enjoy the changing views as we glide along the waterway. |

The Grand Union canal was built in the early 19th century to carry bulk cargoes the 135 miles from Birmingham to London. Leighton Buzzard itself was an important centre for sand and gravel delivered to all parts of the country and you will be able to enjoy many of the features of the past during your trip. On board the Leighton Lady we provide the very best in waterborne hospitality. On our scheduled trips you can choose a drink (alcoholic or soft) from the well-stocked bar, tea, coffee and light snacks. A selection of commemorative souvenirs is also available. For those of you celebrating a special occasion with us we offer music (you are welcome to bring your own tapes or cds if you prefer) and even a karaoke if you would like one. You can also choose from afternoon or fresh cream teas or, for those of you pushing the boat out (excuse the pun) we are able to provide a range of hot and cold buffets specially prepared by our own gourmet catering staff. For those who prefer we can arrange a meal at one of the charming canalside pubs along the route. We are more than happy to make provision for any of your party who have special needs. |

Our baby narrow boat ''Bumble'' is only 18 ft. long, but will more than cater for your private boating needs. She is designed to carry up to six in comfort and so is ideal for a family day out or a gathering of close friends. Bumble has a separate toilet compartment, a sink with water supply, and a hob, so that you can make a brew or heat some soup etc. A kettle, teapot and mugs are provided, but please bring your own utensils and provisions. Alternatively, if bringing food is too tiresome, why not order a specially prepared picnic hamper (including perhaps a celebration cake) or stop for lunch at one of the canalside pubs! Don't worry if you have never steered a boat before, Bumble is easy to handle and full tuition will be given. |
